things i read #7: thinky beauty writing

Sometimes I read something really good online and I just wanna save it somewhere. This is that stuff. Split into categories for easier browsing! (Category names intentionally vague/sometimes inaccurate.) (Or, I guess not in this case.)

My “Straight” Clothes Don’t Fit Me Anymore, Katie Heaney for Buzzfeed: Just a little essay about how coming out can make you feel a little bit like a different person with a different relationship to gender. It was nice, it felt true to my experience.

On Blonde Girls in Cheongsams, Jenny Zhang for Racked: Cultural appropriation in 90s fashion. “There’s this kind of irresolvable trap that occurs when you’re too young to have any power but old enough to know that you want some. It’s the trap of being too inarticulate to have the clarity people expect you to speak with when you speak of the depressing black hole of systematic racism.” Jenny Zhang writes some great stuff, check her out on Twitter and on Rookie.

Why Everyone on TV Has the Same Hair, Julia Rubin for Racked: Is this particularly deep or political? No, but it answers a question I didn’t even know I had. With an in-depth analysis of several TV shows. It’s so weird that I never noticed how every woman on TV has the same hair but they totally do!!

Nina Simone’s Face, Ta Nehisi-Coates for The Atlantic: If you weren’t already frustrated by the incredible irony surrounding Zoe Saldana’s casting in the new Nina Simone biopic, this piece will really drive it home. “But there is something deeply shameful—and hurtful—in the fact that even today a young Nina Simone would have a hard time being cast in her own biopic.”

I have been very tired lately because of some stuff going on in my personal life…I keep having ideas for blog posts but I’m too exhausted to follow through. I’m also trying to decide whether it makes sense to write publicly about any of the frustrating things going on right now. Suffice it to say that I’m not very happy at school right now for reasons both institutional and personal. On the bright side, I am graduating approximately 26 days from now? All I can think about is how close I am to life without homework on the weekends.
